Health
and safety at work act 1974 is a primary regulation in the workplace in the UK.
Local authorities and the health and safety executive are in charge of
enforcing the act to ensure that everyone is safe and understands how to keep
yourself from getting injured with carelessness, the equipment provided or
material provided. The
substances should be handles safely, with care; the employees should stick by
the regulations and the health and safety rules. Control
of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulation includes (COSHH) all of the regulation
shown under:Citation and commencement, Interpretation, Duties under these Regulations Prohibitions
relating to certain substances, Application of
regulations 6 to 13, Assessment of the risk to health
created by work involving substances hazardous to health, Prevention or control of exposure to substances hazardous to
health, Use of control measures etc., Maintenance, examination and testing of control measures, Monitoring exposure at the workplace, Health
surveillance, Information, instruction and training
for persons who may be exposed to substances hazardous to health, Arrangements to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies,
Provisions relating to certain fumigations, Exemption certificates, Exemptions
relating to the Ministry of Defense etc., Extension
outside Great Britain, Revocation and savings,
Extension of meaning of “work” and Modification of section 3(2) of the 1974 Act These jobs include some Chemical that
can cause health issues so you need to ware proper clothes and/or equipment to
protect yourself. So the COSHH has to take place in the industries as follows.Agriculture, Baking, Beauty, Catering,
Cleaning, Engineering, Hairdressing, Offshore oil and gas, Painting, Mechanic
(Motor vehicle repair), Welding and Woodwork.Substances hazardous to health according to the COSHH:Chemicals, Product containing chemicals, Fumes, Dust,
Vapors, Mists, Nanotechnology, Gasses, Biological Agents and germs that Couse
diseases.
The COSHH encourage the employees to follow the rules and regulations provided to them. Which means that they should look at each substance, think in what way are they harmful (by looking at the information about the material) how you might be exposed and how to prevent the exposure. This information should already be provided but the employees need to be self-conscious about the hazards at the workplace.The health and safety (display screen equipment) regulation 1992 is aimed to protect the health of people working with DSE. This work includes reported aches, pains due to them sitting down for long periods of time, also eye discomfort. This applies only if you work in a place where you use a device that has an alphanumeric or graphic display screens for long periods of time with almost no break. The employers can get better chairs for the employees to make work much more comfortable with less aches. The employees themselves could get glasses that protect their eyes from the rays emitted by the display screen.
